Port Credit sits in south-central Mississauga where the Credit River meets Lake Ontario. Its heart is the crossroads of Lakeshore Road and Hurontario Street, and the neighbourhood runs roughly from the rail corridor south to the lake, between Seneca Avenue on the east and Shawnmarr Road on the west. It feels less like a suburb than a small lakeside town that happens to sit inside a big city.
The river mouth was a meeting and trading place for the Mississaugas long before European settlement, and a village plan was laid out here in the 1830s. For much of the 20th century Port Credit was an industrial port, home to the St. Lawrence Starch works and an oil refinery. Both closed decades ago, and the town, amalgamated into Mississauga in 1974, has since reinvented itself around its harbour, marinas and parks. The original village core is now protected as the Old Port Credit Village Heritage Conservation District.
The housing mix is unusually broad for Mississauga: 19th- and early 20th-century cottages and storey-and-a-half homes near the river, post-war bungalows and split-levels on leafy side streets, newer custom infill homes, and mid- and high-rise condos along Lakeshore Road and close to the GO station.
Port Credit's waterfront is its big draw. The harbour is ringed by public parkland with boardwalks, playgrounds and splash pads.
