Yonge-Eglinton, often simply called Midtown, is centred on the intersection of Yonge Street and Eglinton Avenue, roughly halfway between downtown and the old North York line. Broadly, the area reaches from around Avenue Road in the west to Mount Pleasant Road in the east, and from near Lawrence Avenue down toward Davisville and the edge of Mount Pleasant Cemetery.
The crossroads grew up as part of the Town of North Toronto, a separate municipality until it joined the City of Toronto in 1912. The opening of the Yonge subway to Eglinton in 1954 turned the intersection into a major transit hub and office node, and it has been one of the city's most active growth areas ever since. Today it combines a busy urban core of offices, shops and condo towers with quiet, tree-lined side streets.
Around the main intersection you'll find high-rise condos and rental towers. Step a few blocks off Yonge and the streets fill with early 20th-century detached and semi-detached brick homes, many of them in pockets such as Davisville Village, Chaplin Estates and the streets around Eglinton Park and Sherwood Park.
Yonge-Eglinton is one of the best transit hubs outside downtown. Line 1 Yonge-University stops at Eglinton and Davisville stations, with Lawrence just to the north. Line 5 Eglinton, which opened in February 2026, crosses Line 1 at Eglinton station and adds stops at Avenue and Mount Pleasant stations, giving east-west rapid transit across the city.
Yonge Street and Eglinton Avenue are the main roads; Avenue Road and Mount Pleasant Road carry traffic north and south, and Highway 401 is a short drive north. The area is very walkable, and the Kay Gardner Beltline Trail is a handy off-street route for walkers and cyclists. The subway ride to the downtown core is quick and direct.
The housing mix is wide. The main corridors along Yonge and Eglinton are dominated by condominium towers, with many more under construction or approved under the City's Midtown planning framework. Just off the main streets, you'll find a mix of detached and semi-detached homes from the 1910s to 1940s, typically on narrow-to-moderate city lots, plus some low-rise walk-up apartments and townhouses.
Many older homes have been renovated or replaced with new custom builds, while condos range from older, larger-layout buildings to new compact suites. Some houses back onto laneways, and many have finished basements.
